Andrea Quartieri, COO of Packtin, interviewed by Bericus
Packtin and its ability to innovate have always received much attention from media outlets and blogs. In a conversation with the Bericus blog, our COO and co-founder Andrea Quartieri shared a detailed account of the company’s development, from its origins in a laboratory at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia to the present day.
During the conversation, Andrea spoke about the philosophy driving the company: «In our view, nothing should be thrown away from any vegetable product because even by-products – though it would be more appropriate to call them co-products – that are usually treated as waste, actually carry extremely useful molecules, whether from a nutritional or functional point of view. Making the most of them is not only a gigantic business opportunity for us, but a moral duty because natural resources are being
increasingly overexploited, the climate crisis is getting worse every day, and waste is no longer tolerable».
Andrea also spoke about the “Plant of the Future”, and the synergy between Packtin and the Italian agri-food industry, especially the one in the Emilia-Romagna region. He also stressed that «many of the climate and environmental challenges we face today were caused by the linear economic model that enabled the economic development of the West and that was adopted by other industrialised or industrialising countries such as Japan, South Korea, China, India, Indonesia and so on. It must be abandoned, especially considering the population growth in the world, starting with Africa».
